After shaking the point-shoot curse, I decided to take the plunge and bought my first DSLR. I'm very pleased with my new Nikon D90. Here are my first impression and comparison with the second runner up Canon 50D. Also my gallery during my family XMas party. I have a lot of learn, but so far, this is an exciting gift.

In the 80′s, I was the photographer for our high school yearbook. Back then, I had a Minolta SLR camera and got reprimanded by my parents for wasting lots of money on 35mm film and prints. Those days passed and I jumped to the point-and-shoot bandwagon – until today. Now that my Canon SureShot crapped out, I can finally look for an alternative. I bought a Nikon D90 with a 50mm f1.8 and 18-200 f3.5 zoom and can say, WOW, this is an amazing ‘toy’. I researched for about two months before deciding on this selection. After all, this was my first DSLR. While there are a ton of good online references on digital cameras, here are my top picks:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90.htm

http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D90/D90A.HTM

My two finalist were the Nikon D90 and the Canon 50D. I know, many of you out there think that these do not compare, but these kept popping up. My criteria was driven by picture quality, versatility and portability. The Nikon D90 gets high marks on image quality and packs an incredible number of strong features such as great ISO noise behavior, full support of AEB, video HD mode while being in an small body and an excellent value for your money. Canon is heavier, has larger and stronger metal body (Nikon is plastic), better FPS speed, more AF points and faster focus. I’m very please with my choice.

I have no experience with this or any DSLR camera. I’m loaded with several good books and I’m currently in autopilot taking lots of pictures while I continue to refine this craft. Based on this first shoot, I’m pleased that I ditched my point-shoot habit and move up the ladder. I added a gallery section here and will post my pictures and progress.
